Shreveport City Council Approves $ 3.8 Million Purchase of Millennium Studios

SHREVEPORT, Louisiana (KTAL / KMSS) – Shreveport City Council has approved the $ 3.8 million purchase of Millenium Studios.

The 70,000 square foot 6.7 acre facility in Ledbetter Heights, on the edge of downtown Shreveport, opened in 2007 to service productions in Shreveport and throughout Louisiana. It consisted of two sound stages, production offices, a construction plant, a special effects plant and a visual effects studio. Millennium Studios closed in 2016 after the removal of tax incentives for the film industry in the state and the drying up of film productions, but it remains under lease with the Town of Shreveport until December 2057.

At Tuesday’s city council meeting, council member John Nickelson (Dist. C) asked why the city was buying the property for almost $ 4 million.

“It will be for workforce development, that’s a big part of it,” said Shreveport Mayor Adrian Perkins. “It will be several projects. We can provide you with a list of all current projects. It will be the space of a creator. It will be the development of the workforce. It will be a film production if necessary.

Perkins said about $ 1.5 million of the financing for the purchase will come from US bailout funds.

Administration chief executive Henry Whitehorn said the remainder of the money for the purchase came from the city’s economic and community development funds for the Heritage Place multi-family housing complex which is being developed in the region, “and so it’s a revenue generator, because good.”

A project summary provided to city council claimed that the full purchase price of $ 3.8 million would be paid from American Rescue Act funds arriving in the city, but Mayor Perkins said he s was a mistake.

The city council finally approved the funding as one of a series of amendments to the city’s 2022 capital projects budget, with only Nickelson voting against.
